Virtualization platform and OSS Customer Engineer

  1. Role Purpose (overall purpose of the role)
 
NEC is using its class leading radio technology and system integration expertise to address the introduction of 5G technology globally. Using OPEN vRAN technology and strategic partnerships, NEC will be engaging operators to conduct proof of concept technology trials, pilot launches and commercial roll out of 4G and 5G technology.
 
The 5G CoE Operations team in NEC Europe provides customer facing delivery and support services for the ORAN CoE. This includes ORAN network deployment, documentation authoring, network & feature design, network evolution, upgrades, customer acceptance and support
 
The Virtualization platform and OSS Customer Engineer will:
  • Provide customer facing design and technical support services for NEC’s ORAN solution.
  • Manage ORAN customer requirements and needs and work within a NEC affiliate to ensure that the solution and project plans are defined by and implemented in line with business commitments and contracts.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues (both in design and deployment phases)
  • Software integration, upgrades/configuration changes & review and creation of MOP and test plans for the Red Hat Openshift Container Platform (RHOCP).
  • Create and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Work with vendors and internal teams to deliver service.
  • Identify and document the processes needed to drive service excellence with existing suppliers, ensuring that contractual SLAs are met & improvement plans put in place where appropriate
  • Identification, analysis and mitigation of issues reported from internal and customer lab and field tests
                                                                            
It is also the responsibility of the Virtualization platform and OSS Customer Engineer to support Project Management teams providing input when required throughout the product lifecycle. Depending upon experience, other duties may also be assigned by the management team.
 
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of working with RHOCP.
 
Based in Madrid, the Virtualization platform and OSS Customer Engineer must be prepared to travel and work within the Europe and other customer locations when required.
 
  1. Key responsibilities/duties of the role (overall scope - describing the categories of resources controlled, overall results to be achieved, budgets, complexity and contacts, etc)
Responsibilities will include liaising with internal and external contacts on a regular basis.  Some of the duties involved will be: -
  • Provide Technical support to NEC 4G/5G ORAN network deployments and trials, contribute to the operational on-boarding of the proposed RAN solution, both in terms of process definition internally and towards the customer
  • Ensure that the NEC ORAN CoE successfully delivers on its commitments to customers, enabling timely design, seamless delivery and Rollout Services focusing on design, administering and supporting the RHOCP ecosystem.
  • Working with suppliers and internal teams, provide engineering design and implementation support for OpenRAN deployments.
  • Work with the project engineering and support teams to review and optimise the 4G/5G performance of customer vORAN deployments.
  • Engage with customers & partners to conduct design service reviews on behalf of NEC
  • Report to internal project stakeholders, including the NECE Operations and the NEC Management teams on status of customer activities
  • Create New Product introduction processes to be implemented and followed across the Support Services arena, liaising with service delivery and operations partners where required.
  • Service delivery activities include on-site and remote design and implementation of new systems, technical discussions, and explanations of proposed solutions with customers, development and maintenance of detailed Methods of Procedures (MOP’s),  Completion Notices (CN’s), project plans, schedules of activities and deliverables and other documentation as required by the customer, creating integration procedures, as built documents, execution of software upgrade and rollback procedures for each element or service delivered to customer.
 
  • Delivering secure, performant and scalable solutions that enable NEC to achieve its business goals
  • Performs in-depth analysis/discovery of customer’s business and technical requirements and develops clear definition of the appropriate solution including business use case demonstrations, associated operational and value benefits, and overall value proposition of the NEC solution set
  • Carry out the technical design and development of the RHOCP based product as part of an agile and operational team, accurately estimating stories and tasks considering their level-of-effort, complexity, and uncertainty.
  • Input into functional requirements, ensuring these are clearly stated and testable and ensure non-functional requirements are addressed.
  • Creatively prescribing (from design to delivery) solutions to help solve a client’s business initiatives, challenges and technical requirements
  • Design, manage, and maintain tools to automate operational processes.
  • Implement and manage continuous delivery systems and methodologies on virtual infrastructure.
  • Assist project managers with project planning and scheduling. Plan, track, and report on work progress.
  • Write supporting documentation for design, configuration and on-going support
  • Understand and anticipate infrastructure needs creating an environment where Dev/QA/Staging/Production work can proceed securely, efficiently, and flexibly, and the product can scale.
  • Communicating solution proposals at any level of the business required from a CxO to a detailed business and/or technical sponsor
  • Own & resolve, with the assistance of other team members, all assigned issues
  • React to all customer requests in a timely & professional manner.
 
 
Essential skills:
  • 5+ or more years’ recent experience in RHOSP/RHOCP systems design and testing
  • Understanding of Networking Protocols like IP, TCP, SCTP, IPSEC
  • Provide knowledge transfer and knowledge sharing to internal teams and colleagues
  • Very solid knowledge of Linux OS
  • Deep knowledge of network virtualization/cloud concepts & working experience of containerization and Kubernetes (K8s)
  • Ability to ensure client success through deployment strategies, engaging services and business partners to help a customer successfully deploy the technology.
  • Configure and additionally, understanding application development lifecycles as well practical experience in working with continuous integration and continuous deployment tools as part of the container lifecycle.
  • Actively engage with other project and technical teams to improve cross working / team knowledge
  • Provide Subject Matter Expert level code and application support when needed, including leadership of technical investigations.
  • Maintain technical knowledge of current technical trends and standards
  • Good customer and vendor facing skills
 
 
Advantageous skills:
  • Knowledge on the 5G core network architecture
  • Understanding of network security aspects covering OS, network and application security

  • Minimum 5 year experience with the RedHat OpenShift Container Platform.
  • Knowledge & experience with VPN, IPSec, SCTP, TLS, IPv4, and IPv6, and Routing Protocols/technologies. Ansible Tower, Playbook, and REST API.
  • Expertise with Kubernetes, working with Docker or similar container technologies
  • TCP Networking
  • Experienced in working in front of customer teams and operating in high pressure environments
  • Fully competent in site implementation, commissioning, integration activities
  • Experience with Virtual infrastructure and Public Cloud and On Premises platform.
  • Experience working with infrastructure as code technologies such as Terraform.

  • Working knowledge of NFVi deployment techniques and processes
  • Knowledge/experience 4G & 5G Technologies: Diameter (RFC 3588) protocol/applications/interfaces/http2, LTE/EPC/IMS architectures (PCRF, PCEF, MME, BBERF, CSCF, DRA, OCS, OFCS).
  • Knowledge & experience with the following LAN technologies: Ethernet (10/100/1000/10G), VLANs, Spanning-Tree, and switching knowledge.
  • Knowledge of git version control system.
