ORAN Implementation and Systems Integration Engineer

  1. Role Purpose:  ORAN Implementation and Systems Integration Engineer
NEC is using its class leading radio technology and system integration expertise to address the introduction of 5G technology globally. Using OPEN vRAN technology and strategic partnerships, NEC will be engaging operators to conduct proof of concept technology trials, pilot launches and commercial roll out of 4G and 5G technology.
The 5G CoE Operations team provides implementation services for NEC’s OpenRAN deployments, which include the network deployment and solution test activities needed from initial install through to customer acceptance.
The Implementation and Systems Integration Engineer will:
  • Create system integration processes from scratch
  • Facilitate hands on new product introduction
  • Provide customer facing integration and commissioning of O-RAN, vRAN elements at customer site
  • Integrate the NEC vRAN solution to customer networks
  • Meet deployment deadlines and service objectives
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in new product introduction and operational phases
  • Handover the solution to the operations support teams upon customer acceptance
  • Provide technical support to the customer throughout the integration and test phase
  • Update installation documents as and when required
  • Support test lab activities including physical installation, system commissioning and system test
  • Software upgrades/updates of elements & preparation of MOP
  • Create and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers
  • Work with vendors and contractors to management system delivery
  • Identification, analysis and mitigation of issues reported from internal and customer lab and field tests
  • Supporting system performance evaluation and improvement during technology trials and commercial pilots
It is also the responsibility of the Operations Engineer to support Project Management teams providing technical input when required throughout the product lifecycle. Depending upon experience, other duties may also be assigned by the management team.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of working in RAN integration and Operational activities, network transformation and automation programmes.
Based in SPAIN, the ORAN Operations & Integration Engineer must be prepared to travel and work within the Europe and other customer locations when required.
  1. Key responsibilities/duties of the role (overall scope - describing the categories of resources controlled, overall results to be achieved, budgets, complexity and contacts, etc)
Responsibilities will include liaising with internal and external contacts on a regular basis.  Some of the duties involved will be: -
  • Commission and integrate 4G/5G OpenRAN products in the customer pilot and commercial deployments
  • Work with customers for first time integration and commissioning of OpenRAN elements RU, DU, and CU, involving Transport Network, RAN and Core platforms.
  • Networking troubleshooting layer 2 and layer 3 issues using sniffers (Wireshark, tcpdump, etc.)
  • Detailed analysis of element logs and subscriber traces to pinpoint and resolve integration issues.
  • Creation of integration procedures, as built documents, software upgrade and rollback procedures for each element or service delivered to customer.
  • Good customer and vendor facing skills
  • Own & resolve, with the assistance of other team members, all assigned issues
  • React to all customer requests in a timely & professional manner.
  • Report to NEC Deployment Manager, project stakeholders, including the NECE Head of Operations on the status of activities
  • Author reports when required according to departmental procedures.
  • Escalate issues or problems in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Perform planned work activities in line with operational & contractual requirements.
  • Actively participate in technical transfer sessions
  • Adds value to the team as a resource in his or her field of product expertise in addition to leveraging this expertise across the telecommunications field as a whole.
  • Provide technical support to Product Management team as and when required throughout the project life cycle.
  • Keep up to date with new equipment/features that will be implemented in the customer network.
  • Identify improvements to support processes to the management team & assist in improvement initiatives.
  • Build co-operative customer relationships at all levels, building trust & confidence in NEC as a partner
Essential skills:
  • 5+ or more years’ recent experience in LTE system integration, testing and troubleshooting (system logs, OS logs, UE logs, network logs, etc.)
  • RAN Integration knowledge and experience and proven track history
  • Knowledge in OpenRAN integration protocols between RU, DU and CU
  • Strong end-to-end RAN knowledge (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G)
  • RAN Technologies (vRAN, Small Cells, MIMO, Timing and Sync with GPS, PTP)
  • Understanding of Networking Protocols like IP, TCP, SCTP, IPSEC
  • Understanding of 3GPP standards, including procedures, call flows, KPI, statistics
  • Provide knowledge transfer and knowledge sharing to internal teams and colleagues
  • Good knowledge of Linux OS
  • Ability to quickly grasp and adapt to new technologies and concepts.
  • Familiarity with macro and small cell deployments
Advantageous skills:
  • Experience in using and analysing TEMS, NEMO Handy and handsets in engineering mode
  • Understanding of network virtualization/cloud concepts & experience in OpenShift, Kubernetes and Docker
  • Additional knowledge on the core network architecture
  • Understanding of network security aspects covering OS, network and application security

  • Ability to work independently to identify & resolve problems in a timely manner. 
  • Work flexibility, taking ownership for assigned activities and demonstrate ability to take on additional tasks to achieve project deadlines.

  1. Experience

  • Minimum 5 year experience in implementation and integration of 3G/4G/5G solutions
  • Excellent call processing and 3GPP protocol knowledge
  • Experienced in working in front of customer teams and fielding technical requests in highly pressurised environments
  • Experience in fault finding in mobile networks, encompassing UE, RAN and Core Network.
  • Fully competent in site implementation, commissioning, integration activities
  • Working knowledge of NFVi deployment techniques and processes
  • Experience &  knowledge of trouble-shooting in live networks
  1. Education and/or  
  • Educated to degree level in Electronics /Telecommunication or similar.
  • Masters or post graduate level or equivalent in  Electronics / Telecommunications or similar
  • Red Hat Certified Administrator
  • CCNA

  • Advanced knowledge in 3G/4G/5G RAN Products & Solutions
  • Strong knowledge of routing protocol
  • Strong knowledge of 3GPP protocols: S1-MME, S1-U, N2-AP, N3, E1-AP, F1-AP, F1-U
  • Experience of IP Security (Certificates, Public-key encryption etc)
  • Good working knowledge of Linux administration
  • Experience of executing testing programmes in a MNO environment
  • Knowledge of KPIs in a live field environment
  • Knowledge of Virtual Environments
