NEC Telecom MODUS Ltd. is developing base station technology to be used in “5G” mobile telecommunications systems based on the requirements of mobile operators to support super high speed mobile data, ultra-reliable low-latency communications and massive numbers of IoT devices.

NEC Telecom MODUS Ltd has been developing mobile wireless technology for over 20 years and our output has found its way into many operators’ networks in Japan and around the world.  Our technical teams have a wealth of mobile network knowledge and experience, and NEC Telecom MODUS staff members represent NEC on international standards bodies and industry forums.

Role:
A vacancy has arisen to work on System level analysis and design specifications for 5G+ Radio Access Network with a particular concentration on L3 and Call Processing (CP) part of functionalities and interfaces to support NEC’s commercial product and feasibility investigations. 

Main Duties:
Contribute to the development of NEC’s 5G+ RAN products with current concentration on Central Unit (CU/vCU) product:
  1. Analyse/investigate 3GPP specifications or outputs from relevant forums based on either high-level customer feature requirements or investigation topics.
  2. Produce Feasibility Studies, Feature Requirement Specifications, 3GPP CR analyses and other related documents/outputs to an agreed schedule and required quality within an ISO 9001 QA system.
  3. Actively contribute to internal and external technical reviews and discussions when requested (e.g. group documents reviews, customer support, external discussions, participation in forum meetings, etc.)
  4. Continuously expand your expertise in relevant areas.
Knowledge, Experience and Personal Skills:
The successful candidate must have:
  1. Working knowledge of 3GPP RAN architecture and protocols; 4G/5G L3 key concepts and procedures (e.g. Network Slicing, 5G QoS Flows and Services; RRC Connections Establishment/Re-establishment, Mobility, Data Forwarding, etc.) and related specifications (e.g. NR-RRC, F1AP, XnAP, NGAP, etc.); good end-to-end knowledge, including UE, 5GC and gNB-DU functions.
  2. Strong analytical skills and ability to deliver.
  3. Strong team-working skills and outstanding communications skills, including listening, presenting, information exchange, and writing in English.
  4. At least 3 years feature design or research experience in R&D telecom company.
The following experience and capabilities are desirable:
  1. Eagerness to explore and engage in topics beyond the scope of one’s own tasks; strong interest to understand the broader picture.
  2. Understanding of RRM and SON main functions in terms of purpose and basic algorithmic knowledge.
  3. Familiarity with virtualisation concepts for real-time systems.
Qualifications:
A very good BSc/BEng or ideally MSc/MEng degree in either Communications, Electronics, Physics, Computing or Maths.
