NEC Laboratories Europe located in Heidelberg, Germany was established in 1994 with special emphasis on meeting the needs of NEC’s European customers. The Internet-of-Things platform research groups focus on creating cognitive Digital Twins of the real-world objects using advanced programming models for cloud-edge computing. Those Digital Twins extend the capabilities of their Real-Twin through situation understanding and knowledge processing. We are working with European partners on topics like Smart Cities, IoT for autonomous driving cars, and smart industries.


NEC Laboratories Europe's IoT group is looking for research scientists to utilize AI-techniques and to develop algorithms for a superior situation modelling and related analytics in Smart City and Smart Industry scenarios for human behavior and crowd mobility.

Part of this research will extend the current ‘Digital Twin’ mainly state capturing model to be able to represent a more complex (deep) real world situation and its relationships in dynamics, scale and  heterogeneity. Therefore the ability to represent, classify and differentiate actual situations will enable us to suggest recommendations to authorities and/or influence assistance systems to optimize situation evolution (Urban Reasoning).

Our work ranges from foundational research and IPR creation to prototype development for transfer to NEC products and services. We are embedded in international research collaborations ranging from collaborative research over large scale pilots for IoT to establishing our technologies in standards.

Our working language is English. The position is initially limited to two years.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Strong publication record (ACM, IEEE Journals, IoT, BigData, Software Engineering) Broad knowledge of IoT architecture and protocols
  • Deep understanding of Situation Classification and related information modelling and analysis
  • Understanding AI and other techniques to generate context from IoT / other data sources
  • Knowledge about or practical experience with large scale IoT system is a plus
  • Realized systems ranging from early experiments to (at least) working system-level prototype
  • Programming proficiency in Java, Python, Go
  • Familiarity with software development in Clouds (OpenStack, Hadoop, SPARK, AWS) and under UNIX-based system (Linux, FreeBSD etc.)

We expect a Ph.D. in Computer Science/AI or related fields (or M.Sc. plus equivalent experience).
