Open RAN Support Lead

NEC is using its class leading radio technology and system integration expertise to address the introduction of 5G technology globally. Using Open vRAN technology and strategic partnerships, NEC will be engaging operators to conduct proof of concept technology trials, pilot launches and commercial roll out of 4G and 5G technology.
To support this initiative, NEC has established a 5G Centre of Excellence (CoE) in the UK that operates as a centralised engineering team to support NEC’s activities in Open RAN globally.
As part of the 5G CoE Operations team in NEC Europe, the Open RAN Support Lead will ::
  • Assist the Operations Manager in the day to day running of the ORAN Support team and the Service Delivery Management of all Customer support contracts
  • Manage ORAN customer escalations, work with NEC affiliates to ensure that resolution plans are defined by and implemented in line with business commitments and contracts
  • Identify and document the processes needed to drive service excellence with existing suppliers, ensuring that contractual SLAs are met & improvement plans put in place where appropriate
  • Develop & implement KPIs for Managed Services vendors, ensuring improvements in the performance management methodology
  • Identify improvements to existing service delivery methodologies, gaining business approval for improvement initiatives & driving implementation
  • In partnership with Business Development, develop new services offerings, together with promotional material, that can improve the services revenue within the ORAN business
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of working in RAN network programmes and Macro network campaigns.
The Open RAN Support Lead may be expected to assist with technical and operational on-boarding of partner’s offered products, evaluating the technical solution offered from an operational
Key responsibilities/duties of the role (overall scope - describing the categories of resources controlled, overall results to be achieved, budgets, complexity and contacts, etc)
  • Responsibilities will include liaising with internal and external contacts on a regular basis.  Some of the duties involved will be:
  • Day to day running of the ORAN Support team and Service Delivery Management
  • Support of the NEC 4G/5G RAN network deployments and trials by contributing to the operational on-boarding of the proposed RAN solution, both in terms of process definition internally and toward the customer.
  • Work with the project & engineering teams to review and optimise the 4G/5G performance of customer RAN deployments
  • Report to project stakeholders, including the NECE Head of Operations and the NEC Management teams on status of activities
  • Definition & implementation of Service Improvement Plans where appropriate
  • Definition & implementation of new services offerings
  • Chair Outage Review meetings, ensuring that lessons learned exercises are completed & all recommendations implemented to avoid repeat incidents
  • Define patch rollout strategy for Technical Support function in consultation with all involved parties
  • Engage with customers & partners to prime senior level operational reviews on behalf of NEC
  • Ensure that New Product Introduction processes are defined & executed across the Support Services arena, liaising with service delivery partners where required
  • Ensure that NEC ORAN CoE successfully delivers commitments to partners, enabling seamless delivery of Support Services
  • Be aware of & comply with all Health & Safety instructions & regulations.
  • Be aware of & comply with all Quality instructions & regulations.
  • Highlight any Health & Safety non-compliances in accordance with company regulations.
  • Other tasks & responsibilities that may be requested from time to time by the management team.
  • Relevant experience in a responsible role relevant to 3G/4G/5G operational support and technical evolution
  • End to end system level knowledge across Telecommunications Networks & Solutions
  • Knowledge of generic telecommunications operator requirements
  • Project Management experience
  • Experience of deploying solutions in a telecommunications operator, either from a operator or supplier perspective
  • Experience of working within an Operations team
  • Experience of working independently and delivering results in a timely fashion
  • System Level knowledge of 3G/4G/5G ORAN architectures and solutions
  • Working knowledge of NFVI operational support techniques and processes
  • People Management experience
  • Ability to work flexibility, taking ownership for the operations function and demonstrating an ability to take on additional tasks to achieve project deadlines.
  • Ability to travel globally to deliver business requirements.
  • An awareness of NEC’s business priorities and Commercial considerations
  • Be a strong team player.
  • Fluent and confident English language skills, both verbal & written.
Professional Skills and Knowledge
  • Solid working knowledge of Mobile Network technology
  • Ability to understand create, implement and evolve complex operational systems and processes involving multiple stakeholders and suppliers
  • Clear communicator (written and verbally)
  • Ability to effectively explain complex technical details to others
  • Familiarity with the 3GPP architectures
  • Familiarity with Open vRAN
  • Working knowledge of legacy (2G/3G) Radio technology
