Open RAN NFVi Deployment Engineer

Role Purpose
 
NEC is using its class leading radio technology and system integration expertise to address the introduction of 5G technology globally. Using Open vRAN technology and strategic partnerships, NEC will be engaging operators to conduct proof of concept technology trials, pilot launches and commercial roll out of 4G and 5G technology.
 
To support this initiative, NEC has established a 5G Centre of Excellence (CoE) in the UK that operates as a centralised engineering team to support NEC’s activities in Open RAN globally.
 
As part of the 5G CoE System Operations team in NEC Europe, the Open RAN Engineer will perform the role of Network rollout and Operations for the RAN network in the following areas:
 
•             Implement Telco Cloud NFVi solutions and services to host vRAN applications within customers lab, pilot and commercial networks
•             Install and deploy NFVi platform and applications against procedures
•             Configure and commission NFVi platforms as per design and parameters
•             Meet deployment deadlines and service objectives
•             Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in deployment and operational phases
•             Create as built documentation, working procedures, help with developing and improving product documentation
•             Execute test plans needed to gain customer acceptance
•             Handover the solution to the operations support teams upon customer acceptance
•             Support test lab activities including site survey, physical installation, system commissioning
•             Software upgrades/updates of elements & preparation of MOP
•             Create and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers
•             Work with vendors and contractors to management system delivery
•             Identification, analysis and mitigation of issues reported from internal and customer lab and field tests
•             Supporting system performance evaluation and improvement during technology trials and commercial pilots
•             Perform planned work activities in line with operational & contractual requirements.
 
It is also the responsibility of the Operations Engineer to support Project Management teams providing technical input when required throughout the product lifecycle. Depending upon experience, other duties may also be assigned by the management team.
 
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of working in Telco Cloud Installation and Operational activities, network transformation and automation programmes.
 
Responsibilities will include liaising with internal and external contacts on a regular basis.  Some of the duties involved will be:
Essential Skills
 
•             Relevant experience working in installation and commissioning as a Linux Administrator
•             Deep experience of Linux systems, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Red Hat Satellite, clustering, directory services, and identity management
•             Proficient in telco cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) deployment - OpenStack, OpenShift, Ceph Storage and VMware ESXi, vSphere, vSAN, NSX
•             Experience of Containers (Docker, OpenShift, Kubernetes, Tanzu)
•             Experience of Automation tools Python, Puppet, Ansible and Playbook scripting
•             Networking – TCP/IP, Routers, Firewall, Load Balancers, DNS, Routing Protocols configuration.
•             Hands on experience in configuring network elements, Juniper, Cisco, Dell, Fortinet
•             Data Center networking, Virtualization, NFV and SDN, vSwitch
•             Working integration knowledge of Management and Orchestration, FCAPS, MANO, RANDO, EMS/NMS, OSS/BSS, Zabbix
•             Strong hands on skills with data centre infrastructure, hardware deployment, troubleshooting and management
•             Technical understanding of the core hardware elements of Telecom and enterprise data centers (i.e. compute, networking, and storage) and the software/hardware ecosystem that supports infrastructure virtualization
•             Strong problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills
•             Good technical documentation skills
•             Creative thinking ‘outside of the box’
•             Ability to work self-sufficiently and be self-motivated, agile
•             Report to NEC Deployment Manager, project stakeholders, including the NECE Head of Operations on the status of activities
 
Desirable Skills
 •             Red Hat Certified Administrator
•             VMware Certified Professional
•             Knowledge in 4G and 5G Radio network architecture and ecosystem
•             Knowledge in Radio Access Network (RAN) and RAN virtualization
•             RAN Technologies (vRAN, Small Cells, MIMO, Timing and Sync with GPS, PTP)
•             Knowledge of O-RAN specs, TIP/OpenRAN projects

 •             Ability to work independently to identify & resolve problems in a timely manner. 
•             Work flexibility, taking ownership for assigned activities and demonstrate ability to take on additional tasks to achieve project deadlines.
•             Ability to travel when required to do so by business requirements
•             Ability to build strong working relationships with customers and partners in order to obtain benefits for NEC.
•             Be a strong team player.
•             Fluent and confident English language skills, both verbal & written.
 
Based in UK, the ORAN Operations & Integration Engineer must be prepared to travel and work within the Europe and other customer locations when required.
