NEC Laboratories Europe located in Heidelberg, Germany was established in 1994 with special emphasis on meeting the needs of NEC’s European customers. Current topics include 5G networks, data science, artificial intelligence, IoT platforms, software-defined networking, blockchain, and IoT security. We enhance the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) systems by combining logic and deep learning. Our research overcomes restrictions of deep learning to low-dimensional data structures. Enhanced with representation learning methods, we apply deep learning to systems of high complexity with improved prediction accuracy, high scalability, and with a performance suited for low-latency applications.

We target to address the performance and scalability of machine learning platforms by accelerating learning and inference of neural networks as well as by providing optimized resource allocation for data-dependent workloads ion heterogeneous computing environments.

With this, we open up new business and government applications including personalized advertising, retail optimizations, financial predictions, health monitoring and public safety infrastructure planning.


NEC Laboratories Europe's machine learning group is looking for research scientists to design, develop, and implement ML algorithms with real-world impact. We are an international team of researchers who are excited about the potential of ML to power new products and services. We have a track record of producing top-tier research and we publish regularily at conferences such as ICML, NIPS, UAI, EMNLP, and ECCV.

The current focus of our group is on deep learning for structured data such as sequences and (knowledge) graphs, and we are exploring ML methods to integrate various data modalities such as language and vision. We also want to find ways to make ML systems more human-friendly and interpretable. If you are excited about top-tier machine learning research and staying relevant to business applications, you should apply.

We participate in research projects with both industrial and academic partners. We want you to write your research papers and encourage you to stay actively involved in the research community. English is the working language in the lab. Initially, the position is limited to two years.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Publication(s) at top-tier AI/ML or NLP conferences (e.g., ICML, NIPS, UAI, KDD, EMNLP, ACL, CVPR, ECCV)
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python
  • Good written and spoken communication skills
  • Familiarity with machine learning and data science libraries such as scikit-learn, PyTorch, and Tensorflow.
  • Experience with machine learning for knowledge graphs and relational learning is beneficial
  • Experience with knowledge graph and logical reasoning is beneficial

We expect a PhD degree in computer science or a related field.
