The Data Science Applications (DSA) group develops automated machine learning technology to tackle prediction, optimization and classification problems in primarily the transportation, logistics and retail segments. We aim to provide artificial intelligence that facilitates the tasks of decision makers in rapidly changing environments, such as through predictive insights and recommended actions

We are an international team of researchers passionate about bringing machine learning to the real world. We develop new algorithms, publish them at top scientific conferences, try them out on real problems with our customers and implement them in prototypes for NEC’s future products and services.

Our current focus is the simultaneous learning of prediction/classification models and binary structures such as graphs to enable multi-task and transfer learning, as well as to improve classical (semi-) supervised learning tasks. We target applications in the transportation, retail, financial, and other sectors.

We are looking for a Machine Learning (Senior) Researcher who will develop novel algorithms in cooperation with our team to contribute to the creation of differentiating technology with wide applicability. Your tasks will include technology area and target setting, validation in agile prototypes, support of real-world trials, transfer of technology to business units.

NEC Laboratories Europe is located in Heidelberg - one of Germany’s most beautiful and idyllic towns. English is the working language in the Laboratories.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Strong publication record at top-tier venues  (KDD, N(eur)IPS, ICML, IJCAI, AAAI preferred)
  • Broad knowledge of machine learning paradigms including statistical machine learning as well as deep learning
  • Proven results in novel algorithm design for structured data problems in one or more areas among multi-task, transfer/continual learning, graph convolutional nets, neural network search
  • Solid hands-on experience in algorithm validation and refinement. Proficiency in Python. Experience with TensorFlow or PyTorch is a plus
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to both scientific and general types of audience
  • Good project planning and organization skills
  • Real-world problem solving, hands-on mentality, strong teamwork orientation and initiative
  • Proficiency in English. Japanese is a plus.

As a minimum, we expect a PhD in Computer Science/ML/AI, (Applied) Math or related fields. Two or more post-PhD years of experience are desired. Applicants are required to submit or link code samples from past projects.

Please send your application by 31 March, 2019 electronically via the applications web system with reference to [1902-319-DSA].
