Role Summary

NEC is using its class leading radio technology and system integration expertise to address the introduction of 5G technology globally. Using Open vRAN technology and strategic partnerships, NEC will be engaging operators to conduct proof of concept technology trials, pilot launches and commercial roll out of 4G and 5G technology.

To support this initiative, NEC has established a 5G Centre of Excellence (CoE) in the UK that operates as a centralised engineering team to support NEC’s activities in Open RAN globally.

As part of the 5G CoE System Engineering team in NEC Europe, the Open RAN Engineer will perform the role of Design and Optimisation Engineer for the RAN network in the following areas:
  • Analysis, specification and design of the RAN network parameterisation to meet the customer requirements, ensuring the proposed implementation will meet the quality, robustness and scalability demanded by top tier telecoms networks
  • Identification, analysis and mitigation of issues reported from internal and customer lab and field tests
  • Feature and Parameter tuning following network Drive Test / KPI analysis, modelling and dimensioning of network traffic to ensure demand is met and quality of experience is maintained through the network lifecycle
  • Identifying, defining and driving feature enhancements back in to the system development and RAN partner alignment activities
  • Supporting system performance evaluation and improvement during technology trials and commercial pilots

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of working in RAN network transformation programmes and Macro network optimisation campaigns.

The RAN Engineer may be expected to assist with technical assessment of partners offered products, evaluating the technical solution offered, the suitability of the Product to the NEC RAN portfolio and contributing to the new product selection process.

Key Responsibilities
 
  • Responsibilities will include liaising with internal and external contacts on a regular basis.  Some of the duties involved Design of the NEC 4G/5G RAN network trials by contributing to the design and documentation of the proposed RAN solution to address the customer’s requirements.
  • Work with the project teams to plan, execute, review and optimise the 4G/5G RAN performance including parameterisation and optimisation of the RAN network
  • Lead the investigations in to reported field issues, ensuring that issues are resolved in a timely manner and that any resulting field learnings are captured in an internal “best practices” guidance note for future activities
  • Identify, define and communicate system improvements, feature requirements and technology strategies to the system development team and NEC’s partners
  • Prepare material for and present to customers as part of pre and post-sales activities where required
  • Define, review and document Customer requirements from the market
  • Assist the PLM team with new product selection by performing technical risk assessment and design audits for new Products against NEC requirements and providing a technical recommendations to PLM based on the assessed risks
  • Report to project stakeholders, including the NECE Head of Engineering and the NEC Management teams on status of activities
  • Identify potential IPR (Patents) in the field of Open RAN or NEC business areas that will allow NEC to differentiate its product offering
  • Assist the business development team as required in responses to business tenders (RFQ / RFP)
  • Be aware of & comply with all Health & Safety instructions & regulations.
  • Be aware of & comply with all Quality instructions & regulations.
  • Highlight any Health & Safety non-compliances in accordance with company regulations.

  • Ability to work flexibility, taking ownership for the engineering function and demonstrate ability to take on additional tasks to achieve project deadlines.
  • Ability to travel globally to deliver business requirements.
  • An awareness of NEC’s business priorities and Commercial considerations
  • Be a strong team player.
  • Fluent and confident English language skills, both verbal & written.
